Have you ever—with good intentions—encouraged a student to “aim higher” by going to college of by pursuing a high status profession in law, medicine, etc.? How do schools with which you are familiar offer similar encouragement or reinforcement? Reflect on the ways these practices may promote or perpetuate the lower social status of other necessary occupations in our society? How can or do you build respect for essential “lower” status occupations?
