The history of religion is dominated by organized and institutionalized religions. In fact, organized and institutionalized religions still dominate the scene as the vast majority of religious people are affiliated with one of the major religious traditions. The hallmark of organized/institutionalized religion is the prevalence of a central creed with little or no room for individual interpretation. Meanwhile, the spirituality movement, which arose in 1960s, has been gaining ground across the world. According to this movement, each individual has the capability to determine the form of the religious/spiritual experience. Accordingly, there is no need for a central creed, religious hierarchy, or institutions to have a meaningful relationship with a higher power or God.
