Food rationing in venezuela

The Venezuelan government has been rationing food since 2014 but the issue has become quite severe this year. The shortage was a gradual issue that begun with long lines in stores and rationing. However, these year has proved that the Venezuelan government can no longer feed the entire population. Over the past few months, there have been reports of lootings being done by regular citizens on food trucks because they feared that they might starve. This issue does not just affect a section of Venezuela, but the entire Venezuelan country. This means that the 31 million people living in Venezuela currently are affected by the shortage. The government has tried to deny the seriousness of the issue but it has grown to be too severe to ignore or hide.

However, the government has tried to help the citizens cope with the issue by issuing identity cards that allow citizens to buy a certain amount of staples at certain times of the week only. This way, they have tried to ensure that there are no people buying goods in excess while others go hungry. However, this has not been a good strategy as people still continue to go hungry.

Food shortage in Venezuela was caused by the fact that the government was not able to sustain the government. The currency of the Venezuelan country became so weak that those who relied on it to import good from other countries could no longer do so. Similarly, the domestic industry was negatively affected by increased government intervention as well as currency controls that became too confusing leading to bad trade-offs with foreign currencies. This is what let to importers being unable to import essentials from other countries. I have chosen this issue because it shows how important food is for any given population of people.

“I did not know that was going on at all. The government should fix the problem and give the people the food that they need to survive and live off of because people that have no food can survive but not for long and they need the protein to grow and I hope the kids are getting what they need to make them grow.”
