International Legal Status of Religious Bodies/Religion in International Law
This paper is an independent study on public international law. It examines the evolution of state sovereignty in the face of competing religious claims. Ideally, it will compare the ways in which early modern Catholic powers, especially the Holy Roman Empire and the Papal States, and more modern Islamic powers, especially the Ottoman Empire and Saudi Arabia, dealt with the evolution of the sovereign nation-state system. I want to try and understand how those powers that attempting to fit into the nation-state system, like the Holy Roman Empire and Ottoman Empire, failed, and how those that were more expressly religious, like the present-day Vatican and Saudi Arabia, survived. Sources in international law are especially helpful.
